Modular Study Format

Flexible Study Format

Within the Xian Tian College, we allow our students to study in a modular format which is quite separate from the usual ‘college model’ of study which is the most common way in which people progress into Chinese medical training. Within Xian Tian, students progress step-by-step through each module that is required in order for them to become proficient in the arts of Chinese medicine. Initially, every student studies the foundation theories and diagnostic skills which underpin all treatment modalities before they then specialise in various different branches of medicine according to their personal interest and skill base.

A Practical Approach

Students study the underlying theories and principles of Chinese Medicine through a series of videos and online studies that are supported by our skilled tutors. These studies begin when you join the Xian Tian College and continue throughout your practice. The theory is studied in this way so that face-to-face meetings between teacher and student can focus on the practical skills of Chinese Medicine. Diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical studies are focused upon during training events and retreats where students learn in an ‘apprenticeship’ style with Damo and other tutors.

We place great emphasis upon practical skills and the quality of our students and qualifying practitioners reflects this.

Study Progression

The chart to the left shows how a student progresses through their training with the Xian Tian College of Chinese Medicine.

Every student begins with the ‘Chinese Medicine Theory Module’ which is largely an online module which is completed throughout the duration of the rest of the training.

After this, students study the ‘energetic anatomy’ and ‘diagnostics’ modules in person. Once these three modules are passed then students are welcome to choose either ‘Acupuncture’ or ‘Tui Na’ as a study module. Those with prior experience in Nei Gong with the Lotus Nei Gong International School also have the option to then study ‘Qi Emission Therapy’ if they wish.

The final module which must be passed is then the extended ‘clinical studies and practice retreat’. Students then work with their allotted therapeutic modality within the clinic before completing their professional qualification with the college.

Timescales for Training

One of the most common questions we are asked is: ‘how long will training take with Xian Tian College?
This question is always going to be tricky to answer as module-based training can be flexible depending upon how students approach their learning. Essentially though, we can discuss the length of time involved if somebody were to go directly through the training as quickly as they are able.
The first module, the online module in Chinese medical theory, is just over 12 months in length. This is then followed by two modules which can be taken and learnt within a further year. These modules are in-person sessions combined with furter online support. Beyond this, a further year of practical training will generally be needed for practical instruction in either Acupuncture of Tui Na. So, in short, the fastest route to professionally qualified practice should be around 3 years but, of course, this would depend on when you begin your study with us compared to when we are running practical events.

The Spiritual Root of medicine

Classically, it was said that the study of Chinese medicine was a vital part of a spiritual practitioners training. Medicine was how an initiate of the esoteric tradition learnt how to apply their understanding of energetics in order to help those within their community. It was also how they studied the nature of Qi and its expressions within the human realm.

As students become more proficient in their practice, the wider spiritual context of medicine and practice is taught. Rather than shying away from the subjects of spiritual practice, Daoism and Buddhism, Xian Tian incorporates these traditions into its study so that students may understand the wider context of their practice.
